The Paleoanthropology Workgroup at the Institute of Archaeological Sciences, University of Tübingen, is seeking to fill a PhD student position

in the framework of the ERC funded project REVIVE, Tracing Hominin Occupations of and Migrations throught the Levant: Reviving Paleolithic Research in Lebanon

 

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic PhD candidate to work on Palaeolithic stone tool assemblages from Lebanon. The successful candidate should ideally have field experience and be ably to perform technological, typological, traceological and/or 3D based lithic analysis.

The position will start as soon as possible and will be limited to a period of 3 years (with a possible fourth year extension). Salary will be according to the German public service scale E13 TV-L at 50%.

The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary team of researchers led by Dr. Sireen El Zaatari. He/She will be expected to actively participate in fieldwork activities in Lebanon as well as in the analysis of lithics material housed at various Lebanese and international (European and US) institutions. All travel costs will be covered. The PhD candidate will also work closely with Dr. Yamandú Hilbert (Paleolithic archaeologist and project field director), applying various examination/analysis techniques including traceology, experimental archaeology, 3D visualizations, etc.

Applicants for this position must hold a master’s degree in Paleolithic archaeology or a closely related field. The applicants should have previous experience in lithic analysis, preferably involving Middle Paleolithic material. Familiarity with the Levantine Paleolithic record will be considered an advantage. The applicants should have a very good command of spoken and written English. Knowledge of the Arabic language is not required, but will be beneficial.
